In the last few months, anyone in education realized the potential for plagiarism that comes with generative AI. As I have mentioned in previous posts, having a good Acceptable Use Policy is critical. Even if your district has no standardized policy, it does not mean you can’t have one for your classroom.
Many educators have turned to AI detectors to determine if a student used AI in their project, and many companies like Turnitin claim their product works for detection, but these products are unreliable. OpenAI admits it in this article. “ Do AI Detectors Work? In short, no. While some (including OpenAI) have released tools to detect AI-generated content, none have proven to reliably distinguish between AI-generated and human-generated content.”
Open AI in the article provides several good suggestions on how to avoid students passing off AI work as their own. They include the following:
Showing their work and formative assessment
Teaching Information and AI literacy
Creating accountability
I highly recommend taking the time to read the article.
