This newsletter series was inspired by the thought-provoking New York Times article, which highlighted how unprepared many institutions are for AGI. As educators, we need to start planning now.
NotebookLM Deep Dive:
What is AGI?
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to AI systems that can perform any intellectual task that a human can. Unlike today's AI—such as ChatGPT, which excels at specific tasks like answering questions or writing text—AGI would be capable of reasoning, planning, learning from experience, and applying knowledge across different domains. In short, AGI would think and learn like a human, but at potentially superhuman levels.
Why Should Educators Care?
Many AI experts predict AGI could emerge by 2026 or 2027—much sooner than most people expect. Whether or not these first systems meet the strictest definitions of AGI, we are rapidly moving toward a world where AI will fundamentally reshape education, the workforce, and society. Schools, colleges, and educators must prepare now to ensure students are equipped with the skills they’ll need to succeed in an AI-driven world.
How is AGI Different from Today’s AI?
Narrow AI (What We Have Now): Excels in specific domains (e.g., e.g., ChatGPT for writing, Duolingo for language learning). It lacks general intelligence and cannot apply knowledge across different areas.
AGI (What’s Coming): Would be able to understand, reason, and learn at human (or superhuman) levels, adapting to new tasks without additional programming. It could potentially outperform humans in nearly every field.
What Does This Mean for Education?
Educators do not need to panic—but they do need to prepare. Schools should focus on:
✅ AI Literacy – Teaching students and staff what AI can and cannot do.
✅ Critical Thinking & Media Literacy – Ensuring students can assess AI-generated content and avoid misinformation.
✅ Cybersecurity & Ethical AI Use – Protecting student data and promoting responsible AI use.
✅ Creativity & Problem-Solving – Encouraging skills that AI cannot easily replicate.
✅ Emotional Intelligence & Communication – Prioritizing the human aspects of education.
Ethical Considerations of AGI in Education
As AGI approaches, educators must consider its ethical implications:
Bias & Fairness: How do we ensure AI-driven educational tools treat all students equitably?
Privacy & Surveillance: Will AGI-powered systems compromise student privacy and data security?
Job Displacement: How should schools prepare students for careers in a world where AGI automates many jobs?
Misinformation & Manipulation: How can we teach students to critically assess AI-generated content and resist AI-driven misinformation?
Dependency on AI: Should students rely on AGI for learning, or should we emphasize human-centered education?

We are just getting a handle on ANI in my district, so I appreciate this push to think forward. Right now teachers are using AI to assist with content creation, differentiation, and some feedback. Some students are receiving AI literacy lessons, depending upon which school they are in and how their teachers feel about the tool. We definitely need comprehensive AI instruction across grade levels to prepare for AGI.
