AI Persuasion in the Classroom

What new research reveals about chatbots influencing beliefs and what educators must do next.

Recent research — reported by the MIT Technology Review — shows that conversational AI chatbots can influence voter attitudes much more effectively than traditional political ads.

In experiments involving thousands of participants across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Poland, short conversations with AI chatbots changed people’s candidate preferences or policy views, sometimes by several percentage points.

These shifts were larger than what one would expect from conventional ads, suggesting that AI may already be a potent tool.

But these chatbots don’t just regurgitate benign information. The same studies found that when the bots ran out of solid evidence, they often resorted to making misleading or false claims, especially among models designed to advocate for certain political viewpoints.

In short: AI can be persuasive, fast, and personal. That makes it especially dangerous when deployed in political contexts, more dangerous than generic ads, because it can feel like a one-on-one conversation rather than a broadcast message.

As a school librarian, educator, and equity advocate, I believe that the rise of persuasive AI demands close attention. Here are key concerns:

  • Younger people may be especially vulnerable — Teens and young adults who are forming political opinions might be swayed by seemingly authoritative “AI advisors” without fully discerning accuracy.

  • Erosion of trust in information environments — If AI can so easily mislead or persuade, students and community members may gradually lose confidence in what is “real,” especially in polarized or emotionally charged contexts.

  • Amplified inequities — Wealthy tech owners, powerful companies, or private individuals (such as billionaire-backed AI projects) may wield outsized influence over public discourse. That undercuts democratic equality, particularly in communities with fewer resources to counter misinformation.

  • Need for digital literacy and critical thinking — Schools and libraries must renew efforts to teach how to evaluate sources, question AI-generated content, and understand when digital persuasion is at work.

  • Urgent call for policy and oversight — Existing regulations around political advertising were not written for persuasive, dynamic AI chatbots. New policy frameworks will be needed if AI becomes common in campaigns.


What This Means for the Future — And What We Should Do

  1. We must treat AI as a political tool, not just a technological convenience. The difference matters.

  2. Embed AI literacy into curricula — not just “how to use AI,” but “how to question AI,” especially in civic, history, and media-studies classes.

  3. Support transparency: Demand that any AI-based political persuasion clearly disclose its AI, not a human.

  4. Advocate for regulation: Push for public policy that addresses the unique risks of AI-driven persuasion, micro-targeting, and misinformation.

  5. Use our platforms (libraries, community centers, classrooms) to raise awareness. People need to know AI can shape opinions — often invisibly.

The new research makes it unmistakably clear: AI chatbots are not just passive tools — they are now active agents shaping political views, public discourse, and potentially election outcomes for educators, librarians, and community leaders, which represents a profound shift. We must act not just to harness AI’s educational promise but to protect democratic integrity, build information resilience, and support informed citizenship.

The research on AI persuasion highlights a shift that schools cannot ignore. Students already rely on AI tools, and many trust them more readily than traditional sources.
