Once you understand that strategy, you begin to see why education has become one of the most important markets in artificial intelligence.
Education Has Become One of AI’s Most Important Markets
For decades, education has been an important gateway for technology companies. Google invested heavily in Google Workspace for Education. Microsoft built education versions of Office and Teams. Canva and Adobe both created programs specifically for schools. The goal was never simply to give teachers free software. The goal was to build familiarity, establish trust, and become part of everyday teaching and learning.
Artificial intelligence companies are following that same playbook, but the stakes are even higher. AI is rapidly becoming part of how people search for information, write, create, solve problems, and communicate. As a result, educational leaders are spending significant time managing highly visible, learner-facing debates while, behind the scenes, teachers are quietly building their own AI-supported workflows.
From the perspective of AI companies, those teacher workflows may be a much safer entry point than trying to persuade parents that AI is appropriate for students while navigating all the political, ethical, and practical concerns that come with that conversation. It is a smart and pragmatic way into education when the front door is still covered in caution tape.
But free, teacher-oriented AI access also creates substantial risk for districts. I sighed when I saw the announcement about free Claude access for teachers, not because the product lacks value, but because individual educator access can quickly outpace district governance. Even where an educator product offers FERPA-related protections, teachers may still move student information or other confidential data outside approved systems. When the same tool is used on a work computer and a personal phone, the boundaries become even harder to manage.
Some districts are training educators on these issues. Others are still so focused on learner-facing policies that teacher adoption is happening faster than governance, professional learning, and technical controls can keep up.
This also creates a future change-management problem. Many districts will eventually standardize around one or two approved AI systems. Teachers who have already built workflows around a different platform are unlikely to welcome that disruption. Educator autonomy matters, but we are not yet in a place where a bring-your-own-AI approach is a safe or sustainable model for schools.
